the story of shesha naga (Ādi Śeṣa / Ananta)

The Birth of Shesha Naga (Ādi Śeṣa / Ananta)

According to the Mahābhārata, Viṣṇu Purāṇa, and Bhāgavata Purāṇa traditions, Shesha Naga was born in the earliest age of creation, at a time when the cosmic order was still taking shape.

Parentage

Shesha was born to:

  • Kashyapa, the great Prajāpati and progenitor of many races, and
  • Kadru, the mother of the Nāgas.

Kadru gave birth to a thousand serpent sons, of whom Shesha was the eldest and most extraordinary.

The Nature of Shesha at Birth

From birth itself, Shesha was unlike his brothers:

  • He was serene, restrained, and contemplative
  • He disliked violence, deceit, and rivalry
  • He possessed deep insight into Dharma

While other Nāgas became proud of their strength and venom, Shesha remained detached and disciplined, observing the imbalance growing among his kin.

The Curse of Kadru and the Turning Point

In a well-known episode, Kadru quarreled with her co-wife Vinata over a wager. Through deceit, Kadru caused Vinata to lose, leading to Vinata’s enslavement.

This act of adharma deeply disturbed Shesha.

Foreseeing that the arrogance of the Nāgas would lead to their destruction—especially through the Sarpa Satra (serpent sacrifice) of King Janamejaya—Shesha chose a different path.

He renounced his family and withdrew to perform severe tapasya.

Shesha’s Great Tapasya

Shesha undertook penance of unimaginable austerity:

  • He stood unmoving on one leg
  • He subsisted only on air
  • He meditated upon Lord Vishnu alone

His tapasya was not for power, wealth, or dominion, but for cosmic responsibility.

The Boon of Brahmā

Pleased by this unparalleled penance, Brahma appeared before Shesha and asked him to seek a boon.

Shesha replied:

“May I be granted the strength to uphold the earth and the worlds, so that creation may remain stable and beings may live without fear.”
Moved by this selfless wish, Brahmā granted the boon and declared:
“You shall support the earth upon your hoods. You shall be the foundation of stability. You shall be known as Ananta, the Endless One.”
From that moment, Shesha bore the weight of the earth, preventing it from sinking into chaos.

Recognition by Vishnu

Seeing Shesha’s devotion and sacrifice, Lord Vishnu blessed him further:

  • Shesha would become Vishnu’s eternal couch (Ādiśayana)
  • He would remain present during every cycle of creation and dissolution
  • He would incarnate on earth to assist Vishnu whenever Dharma required

Thus, Shesha became inseparable from Vishnu—not as a servant alone, but as the very foundation upon which preservation rests.
